An Amazing View

I love to climb trees.  I always have.  Here I am 70 feet up in the 180 year old oak tree in the backyard of my childhood home.  The view from there was amazing as I looked over the roof of our house at our entire neighborhood.  It was a unique perspective.

We see a man seeking a unique perspective of Jesus in this week's Gospel.

At that time, Jesus came to Jericho and intended to pass through the town.  Now a man there named Zacchaeus, who was a chief tax collector and also a wealthy man, was seeking to see who Jesus was; but he could not see him because of the crowd, for he was short in stature.  So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus, who was about to pass that way.  When he reached the place, Jesus looked up and said, “Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house.”  And he came down quickly and received him with joy.  When they all saw this, they began to grumble, saying, “He has gone to stay at the house of a sinner.”  But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over.”  And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house because this man too is a descendant of Abraham.  For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost.”   Luke 19:1-10

Zacchaeus wanted to see who Jesus was.  He didn't want to miss the opportunity before him so Zacchaeus climbed a tree in order to have a better view.  Jesus recognized Zacchaeus' desire to know Him.  Jesus then invites Himself to Zacchaeus' home.  Once there Jesus says, "Today salvation has come to this house because this man too is a descendant of Abraham."

We must take note of why this happened to Zacchaeus' household.  The key element isn't that Zacchaeus, a wealthy tax collector, was willing to give up much of his wealth.  The key is that as a descendant of Abraham, Zaccheaus is able to receive his inheritance as a child of God.  All He had to do was to seek God.  Jesus did the rest.

What obstacle is in your way that is keeping you from God?  Make it your mission to overcome any obstacle that is between you and Jesus.  The view will be pretty amazing!
